Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative

In June 2021, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland announced a Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative, a comprehensive review of the troubled legacy of federal boarding school policies.

In 2008, The Canadian government passed the Indian Settlement Act Truth and Reconciliation Act to identify the scope of its own past treatment of Native Americans. Canada has formally apologized for its policies and has even offered payments to Native American communities. The United States, however, has never acknowledged its past treatment of Native Americans.

This work will build towards the submission of a final written report on the investigation to the Secretary by April 1, 2022.
